Clube Duque de Caxias will host again the most important Fistball club championship in Curitiba from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 October 2023. The Copa Rosario of CCAA Rosario (ARG) remains this year on Easter weekend firmly in Brazilian hands. In the men’s competition, the SG Novo Hamburgo team came out on top, while SOGIPA won the women’s title once again.
The series of SOGIPA is almost uncanny. In the last 9 tournaments in which the team has competed, they have won each tournament. In addition, Coach Kako Venoroso’s team cheered on the World Cup title at the 2022 World Tour Finals. Now the women’s team prevailed at the Copa Rosario in Argentina and collected another 500 points for the World Tour Ranking. The women beat host Rosario in the final, climbing to fifth place with another 400 points for the World Tour Ranking. SOGIPA continues to clearly lead the ranking with 2,000 points, while Sociedade Ginastica Novo Hamburgo (BRA) is in second position with 1,100 points.
The men’s team of SG Novo Hamburgo won the title at the Copa Rosario. However, Novo Hamburgo did not play for points in this tournament as they used a non-registered player. The final was an all-Brazilian affair with Novo Hamburgo dueling Clube Merces. With 400 points for second place, Merces also takes the lead in the World Tour Rankings, overtaking Ginasticá. Host Rosario took the bronze medal at its home tournament and jumps to fourth place in the world rankings.
Next weekend there are two tournaments on the schedule: the Major tournament in Elgg (SUI) and the 500 tournament in Karlsdorf (GER). After the start in South America, these are the first two tournaments on European soil this season. Elgg is also the first major to be held in Europe.
Teams from Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Germany will take part in Elgg. The Eulachtournament in Elgg is known for the large number of teams and the high quality of the tournament in the adult and youth divisions. From U10 to U16, a casual tournament, to the men’s and women’s elite, the tournament offers a wide range.
The Major tournament in Elgg will also feature a test international match between the men of Switzerland and Italy as preparation for the World Championships in Mannheim in the summer.
At the same time a 500 tournament takes place in Karlsdorf (GER). Many teams from all over Germany use the tournament in Karlsdorf as well as in Elgg to prepare for the new season. Kellinghusen (women) and Waibstadt (men) want to defend the title from the previous year also in 2023. This year the tournament is expected to be held in better weather and free of snow.
The first IFA World Tour Major tournament is firmly in Brazilian hands. The women of SOGIPA won their second title in the second tournament of the season at their home tournament. In the men’s competition, Sociedade Ginastica Novo Hamburgo topped the World Tour with a win at Copa Porto Alegre.
In the women’s competition, the only team from Europe – FBC ASKÖ Linz-Urfahr – fought their way to the final. There, the home team of SOGIPA prevailed and claimed their second tournament win in the second tournament of the season. With 1500 points, the Brazilians are at the top of the World Tour Ranking. Last year, the SOGIPA team already won the World Tour season in impressive style, winning 6 tournaments in as many participations.
SG Novo Hamburgo, the winner of the 2022 World Tour, is also back at the top of the men’s ranking. With the victory at the Major tournament in Porto Alegre, Novo Hamburgo climbed back to the top of the table. In the final, Ginastica beat Clube Merces and was able to celebrate the tournament victory.
The Copa Porto Alegre was attended by 320 athletes from 55 teams in 10 different categories, with 170 matches played.
Already on Easter weekend the next World Tour event will take place. At the first tournament of the season in Rosario, Argentina, the teams will fight for 500 points.

Clube Merces opened the new season of the IFA Fistball World Tour with the Copa Baica Merces de Punhobol. The weekend was typical of the city of Curitiba, with a time of rain and sun, but on Sunday the rain was extremely heavy and unfortunately, in agreement with all the leaders of the participating clubs, the tournament was canceled, as the field was not in conditions of game.
For this reason, the general classification of the clubs was based on the classification that the teams obtained on Saturday.
In the men’s competition the host club Merces could win, in the women’s category World Tour Final champion SOGIPA won the start of the season followed by SG Novo Hamburgo.
The next World Tour stop is on 18 March in Geelong, Australia.
Bulletin 1 contains information on the schedule, drawing procedure, official match ball as well as on the player registration process for long list and short list.
The draw of the IFA 2023 Fistball World Championship Germany is scheduled for Wednesday 22 MARCH. The best 8 nations of the Fistball World Championship 2019 will compete in groups A and B. The two finalists from Winterthur (Germany and Austria) will be seeded as heads of these groups. Germany as the reigning world champion is seeded as the head of group A, Austria therefore of group B. The other 8 nations will also be distributed into the pots for the draw based on their rankings.
The draw will be streamed on the channels of the 2023 Fistball World Championship and the International Fistball Associaton (Facebook & YouTube).
Most of the changes are only slight modifications and clarifications of the rules, changes of the rules are marked in orange in the left column, clarifications are highlighted in green.
“Since 2019, by the World Championship in Winterthur, the IFA Referee Commission began to review about the possible and suggestable changes in the rules of the game of fistball. To make this happen several strategies were taken to understand the necessities, the opportunities and what could be done”, said IFA Sports Commission Chairman Gastao Engler.
First step was to research with the “actors” involved. In all processes we interview National coaches, international referees, doctors in exercise physiology and many players (women and men). In total we had the contribution of over 65 people.
Second step was inside the IFA Referee Commission to analyze all these papers and messages and transform that in better and clear rules for the game of fistball. Following all these study processes a draft of the changes was submitted to the IFA board to be approved. Some adjustments were made and then, the final approval was made. Important to say, right after our beginning the COVID19 pandemic took place what basically froze us for about 1,5 years at least.
In the document communicating the rule changes you will see that some of the changes are only “clarification” of the writing and don’t change the rule. They were made to clearly express the rule already exist. Some are changes regarding needs and suggestions identifying in the process. In total we have 10 “clarifications” and 8 “changes”.
“We are happy to see that this process was made by many hands, and this is what fistball is about… TOGETHERNESS! From now on we will review and recheck for improvement opportunities every year” added Engler.

This year again more than 120 teams have the possibility to participate in 29 tournaments world-wide. ”In the fifth year of the Fistball World Tour almost 50% of all participating teams are female teams, I’m very happy of this gender balance in our World Tour series. The Fistball World Tour is constantly evolving. We are very glad that the World Tour will be carried out on five continents. It is particularly great to see that we have again World Tour hosts in the USA, in India and in Australia in addition to the proven World Tour events and major tournaments in South America and Europe,” says IFA President Jörn Verleger.
The tournament series starts and ends in South America in 2023. The new season begins on 4 March with an IFA 500 tournament of Clube Merces in Curitiba (BRA) and ends in Chile with an IFA 250 tournament on 18/19 November in Llanquihue.

Since then, thanks to Team Norschleswig, the Danish fistballers have presented themselves as one of the most active fistball associations in the world.
Men and women regularly take part in international fistball events, and great importance is attached to youth development, including participation in national competitions in neighbouring Schleswig-Holstein (Germany).

IFA SUSTAINABILITY AWARD goes to TSV Jona from Switzerland.
In 2017 IFA introduced an IFA Sustainability Strategy. With the 2021 established IFA Sustainability Award IFA would like to raise awareness and to promote best practice.
For many years, TSV Jona Faustball is using a well-coordinated “washing-up crew” ensures that there are always enough clean plates, cups, glasses and cutlery available to feed all hungry and thirsty players and spectators.
In addition, waste is consistently managed: Suppliers are integrated into the waste cycle and take back the transport containers and packs almost without exception. The remaining waste is divided and sorted into plastic, cardboard and paper and general waste.
Ecological action is also a priority in turf maintenance. Since the Grünfeld fistball stadium is located in a groundwater protection area, it goes without saying that only environmentally friendly fertilisers are used that do not pollute the environment. The same applies to the colours used for the field markings – these are harmless to humans, animals and plants.
But what really catches the eye at TSV Jona Faustball is the grandstand roof. Since the beginning of 2018, the integrated photovoltaic system with its 190 square metres has been supplying a lot of electricity.
A total of around 140 megawatt hours (MWh) have already been produced, which corresponds to the energy consumption of around 30 single-family homes in one year. A total of 73 tonnes of CO2 have already been saved.
The IFA 2022 SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT AWARD goes to Sociedade de Ginástica de Porto Alegre in Brazil. The club took Fistball to the favelas of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. An initiative we would like to honor.
The IFA 2022 LIFETIME AWARD goes posthumous to Gerhard Strasser from Austria.
Gerhard Starasser, who founded the club ASKÖ Seekirchen in 1980 and has been the clubs chairman for over 40 years. He has dedicated his life to bringing people together through fistball, has brought hundreds of kids to enjoy our sport and has encouraged them to give their best on and off court. And he was one of the founders of the “Jugendeuropapokal” now an European Fistball Association (EFA) event.
His ambition and thrive has not only pushed his club Seekirchen but many say has revived fistball in Salzburg as a sport but also as a community.
In December we learned of his sudden death that´s why we honor him today with the IFA 2022 Lifetime Award posthoumously.
The basis for the awards are the IFA Honorary Regulations. The IFA Awards are presented on the basis of a jury decision or public vote appointed by the IFA Board of Directors. The IFA received over 280 proposals from almost 80 individuals/clubs/associations. The jury is composed by members of the board and discussed all proposals in detail.
The award was announced in December on the IFA channels. Proposals with a short justification or a link in the case of photos can be submitted by individuals, clubs and associations.
