CHENGDU HOST FOR THE WORLD GAMES 2025

The Chinese city of Chengdu will be the host city for The World Games 2025. IFA President Karl Weiss congratulated the Mayor of Chengdu, Mr Luo Qiang, to host the 12th edition of the multi-sports event.

The Vice President of IOC and the Chinese Olympic Committee, Mr Yu Zaiqing, signed the agreement as Witness. President Jose Perurena signed on behalf of the International World Games Association. This was preceded by ratification of the contract by the 37 member federations of the IWGA during the Annual General Meeting at the SportAccord Convention in Gold Coast. Chengdu follows the city of Birmingham, Alabama as host. The 11th edition of The World Games will take place there from 15 to 25 July 2021.

Jose Perurena said at a press briefing afterwards: “By signing a contract with one of the most forward-looking and dynamic cities in China, we have signalled our arrival as a major power in international sport.” The IWGA President added: ”Following our 2021 event in another great country, the USA, we are excited now to start work with our Chinese partners on plans for 2025.”

Chengdu Mayor, Mr Luo Qiang, said: “Chengdu highly appreciates the concept of the IWGA and believe that it is in line with Chengdu’s development philosophy. We are confident that, under the guidance of the IWGA and the support from the Chinese Olympic Committee and governments of all levels, Chengdu can offer the world a successful and excellent World Games, a precious legacy to Chengdu and The World Games.”

The AGM unanimously ratified the decision of the Executive Committee taken the previous day to award The World Games 2025 to Chengdu. This followed a comprehensive bid evaluation, conducted by the IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow, and Vice President Max Bishop, including an on-site visit in March 2019. .

The delegates were given a first impression of the city and what it can offer as host of a multi-sport event by the delegation of the future host with an impressive presentation. Chengdu, a city with 20 million inhabitants and the capital of Sichuan province, is organising several multi-sports events, such ad the World Police and Fire Games, and FISU Summer Universiade, in the next few years.

IFA board meeting on the eve of SportAccord Convention 2019

On the eve of the Sportaccord Convention the IFA Board of Directors held its 13th meeting in the Gold Coast by IFA members participating in the convention including with designated IFA Vice President Vikki buston and Elizabeth Meecham from New Zealand joined by other board members from around the world via Skype. The most important topic was the preparation of and reporting for IFA 2019 Congress on 14 August 2019. After having served for 20 years as a member of the IFA board and having been elected in 2011 as the 5th IFA President Karl Weiss (Austria) will hand over in August the federation, in very good shape to the designated President Jörn Verleger (Germany) who currently serves as IFA Secretary General.

Under Karl Weiss leadership, IFA has more than doubled its membership from 27 in 2011 to 59 in 2019. IFA has established a Fistball World Tour and a Fistball Academy. We run world-class events and have become a core part of The World Games leading to an inaugural women’s competition at The World Games 2021 in Birmingham, AL.

Future Fistball: Navigating the birth of a new fistball nation – Samoa one of the newest IFA Members

At the 2018 Asia-Pacific Fistball Championships (APFC) in Australia last year there were many storylines of interest, but arguably the most intriguing was the inaugural international appearance of the newly founded member of the International Fistball Association (IFA) – the Samoan Fistball Association (SFA).

Formed with the help of their friends at the New Zealand Fistball Association (NZFA), the Samoans began their fistball journey by first getting involved in local matches within the Canterbury Fistball League in Christchurch. After quickly getting a taste for the game, the decided they wanted to push forward with the formation of the national association of their homeland, registering the Samoan Fistball Association and installing Jonny Lene as the inaugural SFA President.

With the second Asia-Pacific Fistball Championships fast approaching, the Samoans set about putting together their first men’s national team, filling the squad with highly experienced sportsmen across various sporting backgrounds, including volleyball and rugby. The latter sporting influence was clearly noticeable, as the final selected squad formed a physically intimidating outfit; their impressive bicep circumferences atypical for what you would generally see on a fistball field!

Despite putting forward an incredibly competitive effort and adding many moments to the APFC highlight-reel, the Samoans had to settle for a winless result at their first international tournament. After taking sets off New Zealand and India and engaging in a deceptively tough battle against Australia, their final defeat at the hands of the Indian team put an end to their bid for third position at the tournament. Not to be discouraged however, the Samoan team were both happy and encouraged by their first performances on the international stage and were delighted to be a part of such an integral fistball tournament for the region, while forming tight bonds with players and supporters from the various international teams.

Thankfully, they will not have to wait for long to once again test their fists against international opponents, with the New Zealand Fistball Association recently announcing to host the 2019 Oceania Fistball Championships in Christchurch as part of the lead up to the 2019 Men’s World Fistball Championships in Winterthur, Switzerland. Taking place over the May 25-26 weekend, the Samoans will once again be putting forward a men’s team, while the debut of a Samoan women’s team also looking likely.

As for the mantra of the Samoan Fistball Association, President Jonny Lene outlines it clearly – “the Samoan Fistball team embodies the traditional Samoan values of family and honour, both on the field and in everyday life. These values are evidenced in our identity as a brotherhood and pride in our culture; and our endeavour to play with honour for each other, our families, and homeland of Samoa.”
Expect to hear more from Samoa in the years to come, as they’re definitely here to stay.

IFA applies for Erasmus+ grant for the first time

After intensive weeks and months of preparation, the IFA submitted its first project application for the Erasmus+ funding programme on time at the end of last week. Together with the Belgian Fistball Association, Fistball Poland, Faustball Austria, the German Fistball League and the SC DHfK Leipzig, an exciting concept for the Fistball Academy and its further development possibilities was created under the leadership of Uwe Schneider, head of the IFA Youth Commission.

Erasmus+ is an EU support programme in the fields of education, youth and sport. In the field of sport, the programme provides financial support for European partnerships and projects which support cooperation, development and networking of the respective sport. With the development and objectives of the Fistball Academy, we meet the criteria to be able to submit an application.

By the project Development, Promotion and Dissemination of Fistball through Cooperation, further Training und Synergies together with the project partners involved, solutions, instruments and concepts are to be developed which sustainably promote and stabilize fistball in the long-term in order to guarantee a broad, future-oriented and long-term development in the member nations.

The Academy supports
– as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and information, the promotion of fistball as a sport with a long tradition,
– as a format for education and training, the further development of fistball in order to strengthen equal opportunities for all nations by supporting associations and improving training and competition conditions; and
– as a forum for communication and dialogue, the dissemination of fistball through innovative approaches and synergies.

The contents of the Fistball Academy should be freely available and usable for the entire fistball world in order to further promote and support the development of our sport. From May to September the project evaluation of the EU will take place, in which the project will be assessed and a decision will be made on possible financial support, which is essential for the implementation of the project to the extent planned. We would like to take this opportunity to once again thank our head of the Youth Commission, Uwe Schneider, for his dedication and great work in preparing and submitting the project application, as well as the project partners involved.

Fistball is comparatively safer. Hong Kong people love playing sports without getting injured. Fistball may be one of the best choices for them,” said Hong Kong Chairman Ewing T.M.Cheng. The next Fistball training workshop is on 25/26 May as well as on 1/2 June.

“Our association aims at promoting Fistball in Hong Kong, allowing one more choice for people when they choosing a healthy and exciting sport to participate . Our association hopes that Fistball can be spread over different ages and circles in Hong Kong,” added Secretary General WONG Kwun-fung.

German Students Championship revitalised

The sports program of the German Students Championship is constantly changing and so after a break of several years, the German Fistball Students Open are back in the competition calendar and have been conducted on 6 and 7 April at the University of Bielefeld.

At the foot of the Teutoburg Forest, the titles have be awarded in two tournament forms, Mixed and Men.
Since the first edition in 2012, more and more university sports facilities in Germany have been incorporating Fistball into their sports program, thus giving the sport a steadily growing popularity.

E.g. in Bielefeld there is a university sports group, which not only participated at this year’s Open, but also in several amateur tournaments. The group consists not so much of active or former Fistballer players, but much more of students for whom the sport is new territory. This fits much to the character of the Open, in which no more than two active club players per team should be on the field of play.

A total of six mixed and three men’s teams from all over Germany participated in Bielefeld including teams from the University of Leipzig, University of Hannover, University of Bonn, University of Oldenburg, the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the host Bielefeld University.

Final ranking Mixed category
1. University of Leipzig I
2. University of Bonn
3. University of Oldenburg

Final ranking Men´s category
1. University of Erlangen-Nuremberg
2. University of Bonn
3. University of Hannover
