SAteam

After a gruelling selection process over the past few months, the squad comprises seven of South Africa’s tried and tested fistballers, including (Back row l-r) Mzodidi Tutuka (ChickenDust FC), Justin Patrick (Kaapse Fisters FC), Rory Liedeman (Kaapse Fisters FC). Front row; Andrew Reid (North Beach Knuckledusters FC), Leif Petersen (C) (Goldfister FC) and Anthony Muteti (Goldfister FC). Inset is Nabeel Petersen (Goldfister FC).

These players come from South Africa’s longest established clubs, most of whom regularly feature in the top three teams nationally.

Team Captain, Leif Petersen on leading the Mighty Galjoens into the World Championships:
“The IFA Men’s World Championships have been a lofty goal for some time in the eyes of the Fistball Association of South Africa. I am privileged to lead such a well honed sporting unit selected from the best of South Africa’s fistballers. The squad greatly looks forward the opportunity to demonstrate to the world South Africa’s potential to be a future fistball powerhouse. The league has put in the hard yards over the course of the last 12 months, and its fantastic to see how we have grown together as a sporting unit. Our squad the „Mighty Galjoens“ are named after the South African national fish, which is famed for its fighting qualities – we cant wait to demonstrate these attributes on the international stage“.

The Fistball Association of South Africa is currently running various fundraising events and seeking sponsors for the Mighty Galjoens campaign. A crowdfunding video to support their efforts will be released in the coming week. Fistball Federation of Australia appoints National Head Coach

Fistball Federation of Australia appoints National Head Coach for upcoming 2015 Men’s Fistball World Championships in Argentina.

The Fistball Federation of Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Laurence Young as National Head Coach of the Australian National Fistball Team for their inaugural World Championship campaign in Cordoba, Argentina.

With an impressive history of leadership and coaching roles within various Australian sporting organisations, Laurence was chosen by the FiFA Board to take charge of the inexperienced Australian National Fistball Team, as they begin the journey towards their inaugural appearance at the Fistball World Championships. Drawing upon his Physical Education teaching background, in conjunction with several years of fistball experience both domestically and internationally, he is expected to have a significant impact on the development of fistball skills, fitness and strategy.

An integral playing member of the Westside Wombats in the Melbourne-based F-League since 2013, Laurence Young also acted as an official FiFA Ambassador while at the Obersee Masters in Jona, Switzerland in 2014, involving himself in advanced training sessions while also playing in and observing various high-level fistball tournaments. The knowledge gained during this visit has Laurence excited about the goals and challenges associated with coaching the Australian Fistball National Team.

On the main focus for the remaining months leading into the World Championships:
“With the official team now selected, we can now turn our focus on using the short time ahead of us to increase our training load and continue on what has already been an overwhelming improvement in our skill levels and teamwork over the last few months”

laurie

On pushing the Australian team to not just be making up the numbers in Cordoba:
“Even though it is our first World Championships, we have several players in the current team with international fistball experience gained from the 2014 Asian Fistball Championships, and as a whole we have dramatically improved our fistball skills over the last 12 months. In addition, by selecting a full squad for the tournament, we believe have added a good mix of skilful players that all add to the overall team dynamic, and we expect to push other nations in an international arena. We want to raise a few eyebrows, in a good way.”

On the source of recent improvements:
“The main focus at trainings have been on improving the consistency and effectiveness of the basic skills, and using that improvement to play better as a team to turn defence into strong attacking movements, while also develop specific tactics to improve overall performance.”

On the aims of the Australian national fistball team:
“If we continue to develop our skills through our dedication to training, I personally believe we will be capable of challenging the newer fistball nations, while competing hard against the more experienced nations. We have already formed strong rivalries with South Africa, Pakistan and India, and we look forward to giving them our best fist on the international stage. In particular, we would take some real enjoyment out of handing South Africa a demoralising, yet sportsmanlike, defeat, so we will continue to train hard to ensure that happens if the opportunity arises in November.”

The Australian Fistball Team is currently running various fundraising events and seeking major sponsor for their team. If you are interested in helping their cause, please contact the Fistball Federation of Australia via email or via their Facebook page.

Fistball around the world – India

We asked a young Indian fistball player about fistball in India. Here’s his story:

Hello readers! You are welcome to know about the sport fistball in India. I’m Vivek . We really like the sport fistball. We really require a peace of mind and need to be quick and it’s a tactical sport. We just love playing this sport. We have 29 states in India and fistball is played in almost all parts. Many people are interested in this sport and we face a lot of competition to get selected for the Indian Fistball Team. To our surprise, even our parents join our games. So they are present outside the court and pretend to play fistball alongside us. Mr. Parag Wankhede is the secretary for the Indian fistball team. He’s a very good person and also really interested in uplifting the sport all over India.

Mr. Prethwiraj Vadakumpuram is the Indian team coach. He’s also a wonderful person. He’s from Kerala but lives in Andhra Pradesh where I live as well. Mr. Prethwiraj was the one who started this sport in our school and trained us well. He always keeps us on cloud nine and his classes are very motivating. He’s a good athlete. Not only these two people – there are many across India who are ready to help us at any point of time. Thank you to everybody who has helped us up till now. To this day, we have had 10 National Championships in our country. Almost all of the states are actively participating in these Championships. They are conducted in different places in India all the time and are a good experience for us. We get to know many things about other places through fistball. Our Indian team participated in the Asian Championships in 2014. We came second

It was a really good experience for us and it was a great pleasure for us to meet Mr. Bernd Hoeckel. He’s a good coach and also a good player. We enjoyed the training session he gave us for a day. We are happy to have qualified for the World Cup which takes place in Argentina! Argentina, we are eagerly waiting to visit you and to participate in the competition. I hope there will be really tough competition as it’s very tough out there, but we will try our best and to the fistballers of different nations: All the best to you all and we will meet soon.

And who is he?

(Vivek Chinta and IFA’s Bernd Hoeckel)

Hello! I’m Vivek. I want to introduce myself to you and tell you about my involvement in the sport fistball. I’m a football player and an athlete. As there was a national championship for fistball and as I used to play this as my recreation game I went to the nationals. Later on I was selected for the Indian Fistball Team. I felt very happy to be part of this. Now I’m 17. I started to play fistball when I was 14. I started to love this sport and I feel very relieved while playing fistball. I’m a defender on the right. That’s my position. I come from Andhra Pradesh in India.

We have many players from India too. I started as a runner in the National Championships and regarded my studies highly. I’m studying engineering. And friends, yes I’m an Indian. I even possess another nationality too and that is fistball and I hope I’m one amongst the world of fistballers. I feel very happy about this. Let’s develop fistball more all over the world. Even people in Antarctica must talk about us and about this sport. I know cricket is being centralised more but that’s not a big problem. My support is there for you all the time. Finally I will tell you I don’t play handball. I play fistball and I’m proud to proclaim it in the presence of you all.
